EDITING ADVICE

Congratulations on completing your first draft- that is a huge achievement to be proud of!

So, now what? You are asking yourself- do I need an editor? Can’t I just self-edit it? Or have a beta reader or my partner read it? NOPE.

Bottom line – your book is NOT COMPLETE until you hire an editor. Ok, so yes, I’m biased. But honestly, I’m an editor, and I hire an editor for my work – always!

Read these notes on why you need some paid help.

1. You are too close to your story.
It is an extension of your mind. When you read it back to yourself, there is no way in hell you will catch the missing words that your brain will automatically fill in.

2. Don’t rely on spell-check. Yes, even upgraded software like Grammarly or PWA.
Spell-check is 100% unreliable. This is your magical creation, your baby. Would you leave your real baby with an untrustworthy person who let you down since they can only slightly watch your bubs? Not a chance.

3. How can you or loved ones look at your work objectively?
You can’t. There’s no way for you or your partner/family to take a step back from the emotional pride and look at your work objectively. Even beta readers will not have specific and thorough techniques to give you the necessary adjustments for a polished story.

You want your story to grab a reader from the start and not let them go until the very last page. And an editor has the solutions to make your story do just that.

It’s kind of like the first time you watched Avatar. You were so engrossed in this new 3D world that when the movie was over, your heart sank, and the realization hit – you weren’t a part of that world any longer, you weren’t blue or able to ride any of the native animals of Pandora. This is the whole point and goal for a writer.

Don’t publish your novel for vanity’s sake just to say you are published. Polish it and make yourself proud knowing you put the best version out there.
If you are on a budget, pick and choose where to spend the money. Save up and then do your due diligence. You’ve come this far. And if you need guidance into which type of editors do what:  click here
